My name is Colby Lawton and I currently attend Hawaii Pacific University. I am majoring in political science and minoring in writing. I am also a member of Student Government Association as a Senator for the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. What I am hoping to achieve career-wise is a position with a publication here in Hawaii. I am interested in internships with newspapers, magazines, publication houses, academic journals or even printing presses. I am relatively adept at editing, and a well-trained writer in APA, MLA, Associated Press and Chicago formats. I am quick to learn new styles and forms of writing that might be distinct to a particular publication.
I am interested in all forms of writing. I particularly enjoy reporting, writing literature and analyzing various forms of media, particularly movies and books. As a political science major, my interests in terms of reporting have been geared more towards national affairs, foreign affairs and foreign policy.
I have an insatiable appetite for traveling that has fueled my interest in foreign affairs. In a world so full of different people, cultures and other wonders, the one rule I stand on is the more I learn, the more I simply understand that I know next to nothing.
I have made the island of O`ahu my home for the last three years and have developed a sense of awe for the Hawaiian islands, its many cultures and the people who live here. Thus, my interests in local affairs has increased exponentially in the last few years as I've developed a larger sense of community.
A fair amount of these interests are reflected on my blog, http://colbylawton.wordpress.com, where you can also find writing samples, events around the island and a little bit of news/opinion on national and foreign affairs as well.
